The playstation has never been overated. Perhaps the PS3 is at this point, but no one has any real solid proof of that.
The PS has been the #1 console on the market for years for a reason.
When it originally appeared back in the late 90's the PS was heads and shoulders above any console out there. As developers became used to working with the technology, games became increasingly more entertaining and popular, especially when 2, 3 and 4 disc games were released. When the N64 came out, it was still way behind the times. With all the third party support going to Sony and odd to use software tools, the N64 hobbled through its generation with a few super hits, but not enough.
(Personally, I enjoy the N64 for its multiplayer games and I think it's one of the few things that kept it afloat.)
The Dreamcast had a chance, but came out at a really bad time. I really enjoyed mine until they stopped making games for it.
During the GCN,Xbox,Ps2 'war' the Ps2 easily outclassed all of its opponents with a much larger library of games because of its backwards compatibility.
It was also the choice of third party developers because it was easy to make games for. The technology hadn't changed so much from the original PS. People simply updated what they already knew.
Today, the Ps2 is still the most popular 'pre-gen' console on the market because of its quality games and huge third party support.
The Playstation has yet to be 'overrated'.
But maybe we'll see a change in the future. Maybe. Who knows.
