Also why would flash ROMs be a problem, assuming they have ones with enough space.

Why even suggest going back to VHS. It had lower quality than DVDs let alone HDDVDs and they degraded over time as well stretched with use. Add to that the hassles of rewinding and fast fowarding and you see product that has gone the way of the 8-Track.
