Ipods (as many other electrical gadgets and appliances from other companies) have a certain operating life time. This is apparently 2 years i.e. on average an ipod will last two years before there are issues. Some users may get lucky and theirs will last a bit longer, others may experience a shorter lifetime.

Cell phones are another notorious example of this. We live in a throw-away society and the manufacturers know this and are profiting from it. Why build something that lasts when in 12 months time you can release a slightly larger, slightly faster renamed version of the same product? Then in 6 months time release a "limited edition" to really milk those sucker consumers.
