consumers get what consumers want
The problem is really very simple, a product whose advertising claim is "our battery is .02% less likely to catch fire" is not as appealing as a product whose claim is "our batteries last 30% longer".

Most consumers are more interested in usablity, in electronics that means light weight, long battery life, quick recharges, etc; than they are in a 2 in a thousand risk of their electronics melting.

If consumers weren't more interested in usability than safety there would be no market for cars, the unmatched king of product related deaths.
