This makes perfect sense.
Law enforcement already employs people to analyze documents to determine who wrote what, based on writing style. It only makes sense to try and do this for texting.

Having said that, I think there's a limitation on how distinct texting can be. Users have developed a lexicon, and it would surprise me if people weren't relatively uniform in how they use it. Some examples:

u 2
l8r
bbl
gtg
lol
OMG

I don't see this kind of thing as lending itself to variation.
