Not An Outage -- An Attack
I strongly suspect Wamu.com and Emigrant Direct have discovered compromising code in their online banking services, likely the result of a compromised user or a commandeered ID. The purpose may have been to obtain access to multiple accounts or to effect the transfer of funds from non-compromised accounts. The extent of the code, its mobility and its capability are likely new to the support staffs.

Unless one or the other institution reveals more about the nature of the problem, we can only speculate. Nonetheless the timing is suspicious. Wamu.com has been spammed for years, and Emigrant Direct has recently been in the news. I fear this is a cyber-bankjob in progress.
