the difference between ms and apple
@nonzealot.

The main difference between apple, and MS is that when apple entered the mp3 space, it was barely a market. They single handedly created the market. If you read the article, you will notice that one of their biggest competitor's head also states that. For them to create the market, the ease of use of an integrated environment was a must. Although they have such miniscule shares, sandisk and iriver are probably selling more mo3 players now, than before apple was there, because apple has succeeded in attracting so many people to mp3 players.

Only reason apple cannot open up now, is because their system is working, and their stock price will crash if they do so, and no investor would want to spend money on them, because they would be giving up a significant advantage.

MS on the other hand, like always is using its huge cash reserves to piggy back on another company's success. Internet browsing, GUI's, Video game consoles, and now MP3 players. That is what makes MS not as good as apple, or nintendo, or even Netscape for that matter.
