How would WiFi be glacially slow? And who cares if it eats bat life if bat life is still good.

Are you sure you havent been ignorning advances in the cell market for like 5 years or so? Cell based music services are actually doing VERY well internationally and are being heavily invested in the US where they are likely to be a success. Todays smart devices are carrying THREE radios (BT, WiFi and TDMA or CDMA) and the battery life is holding up when the device is well engineered.

Maybe do some more research before trying to make long term predictions.
