IBM wasn't meeting the demand (for speed) due to small market
%. After 18 months, still not delivering a 3GHz+ chip (was
promised within 12 months). Apple finally got sick of the delays.

Considering how Apple ALWAYS hyped how much better G5
(and all the way down to the early days of the 68040 and its
predecessors) was to the Intel equivalent, their switch to Intel --
and their subsequent flip-flop of "Intel is much better than
Motorola, oh yeeeeeeeeeeah." is something I don't believe for an
attosecond.

To be honest, the claimed speed increases can be tied to the Bus
speed increases. The Powerbooks had PC2700 (333MHz) DDR
SDRAM and a single core G4 chip The Macbook Pro has 667MHz
DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) and a dual core chip of a higher clock
frequency. The iMacs have a smaller increase in speed, due to
using a dual core chip compared to a single core chip. The high
end G5's are still PPC based. That is until they (Apple) can get a
similar performance boost, since the Quad core G5 uses a
Frontside bus 1.25GHz per processor and up to 16GB of
533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200). So the switch to Intel chips,
is a bit more deceptive than you are lead to believe.
