AMD is superior for which audience?

AMD makes a superior processor than the Intel, so one day I'll have to find Apple's excuse for using Intel over AMD.

I'm raising a serious point, not trying to be funny here: while AMD may (or may not) be the better chip for the DIY PC builder (I've switched from Intel to AMD myself), a company like Apple has a somewhat different set of requirements than I do. Maybe Intel could offer Apple something in other areas that aren't related to pure performance? Maybe Intel offered Apple a better bulk rate than AMD could? Maybe Apple believed that Intel's future lines of chips were going to be better than AMD's future lines of chips? Motherboards are also an issue: maybe Apple found a better deal on motherboards that supported Intel CPUs than on motherboards that supported AMD CPUs? I'm only guessing. As much as I dislike Apple, I have a hard time believing that Intel was picked over AMD without a good reason.
