The whole idea of rebates is to rip off the consumer...
Rebates are basically legalized deception for the most part. First, they know many people won't follow through and file for the rebate. They suck them into the store with the low price on the ad, but in the end, they get the full retail price.

For those that do file, the hoops that must jumped through are ridiculous. Then, finally, many of those that jump through the hoops never see a rebate. While it's true that many do receive their rebate in the end, so many are ripped off that it would be prudent to simply outlaw rebates.

If a manufacturer wants to offer a rebate, the consumer should receive the rebate instantly at the register. Let the retailer file for the rebates. If that were required of retailers, you can bet that rebate programs would come to a screeching halt since retailers would grow tired of being victimized.
