Thank laptops for the LCD surge.
Ever since the days of monochrome black-on-amber dot-matrix style passive-matrix LCD displays, the technology has been improving, and not just in the GPUs. They've been making higher resoulutions at a quicker pace than CRT while keeping laptop battery drain to a minimum. All while the basic CRT technology has remained virtually unchanged since the days of UNIVAC. silly Little wonder why LCDs are replacing CRTs as our monitors, especially since energy costs are skyrocketing. The jump to TV only seems natrual.

Projection is stuck as being a big-screen niche tech. Plasma has potential, I remember seeing gas-plasma displays for laptops/luggables before, but development hasn't been as on-going or rapid as LCD so they have some catching up.
