I agree, Desparate move.
But this time the market is a little different. PC sales are not going to give Dell the growth they want. And I agree that you can't sell consumer electronics without product on hand. So they either have to go big and compete with Best Buy and Circuit City or stick to mail order. I think Dell, as a company, is at a crossroads. They need to figure out which way they want to go and head that direction. IMHO, this is a weak move.
