- Why will blu-ray cost $1,000 as a standalone?

Presumably the cost has something to do with recovering investment. If PS3 cannibalizes blu-ray sales, then a money-losing product is taking sales from a money-making product.
Not all buyers of these devices are dedicated gamers. For the rest, a cheaper price for a comparable experience (which, from the last paragraph of the article, is apparently true) is going to be a significant factor.
The reason DVD player sales are so large and resilient is the fact that it's cheap. The cheaper game device is also going to have an advantage.
I think Microsoft made the right choice when the company used already developed technology to come to market sooner.
Sony? Those losses per device are going to weigh on the company for some time to come.
