You buy an IPOD once, music many times
Now depending on how much profit they make on an IPOD I'd guess that the 29 cent per song they make probably adds up to a pretty penny compared to IPOD sales in the long run.

So say they may $100 off me buying a IPOD and I use that IPOD for 5 years. Now in that 5 years lets say I down 10 songs a month. That's $540 dollars they get from me mines say $140 for overhead. Running webservice with that many users doesn't cost much. So Apple makes $500 off me with an IPOD. Now if I didn't buy an IPOD Apple makes $400 off me, I'm betting there a lot of people with other portable music players judging from how well they sell in stores.
