That link you posted isn't about ownership. A license never states that you don't own what you buy. A license is what allows you to copy a song legally. This how one is authorized to make copies when they are not the copyright holder. So the copy you make is what you own. The license can dictates what copies can you can make like downloading the harddrive then copying to an IPOD or burning to CD. In the end you own the copy or copies that the license allows you copy.

Now what the link you provided is about is that licenses to press CD or even records had massive overhead tied to them that came out of the artists royalties. So even if you 30% they might only recieve 3% by the time the overhead is figured into the picture. Now along comes I-Tunes with hardly any overhead as there is no pressing of CD, packaging, and shipping. There is just distribution. So why aren't the artist getting more now that they the method of distribution with little to no overhead. This in no way changes the licensing that occurs. That must still exist or I-tunes for example would have you breaking the law if you downloaded a song.

It's confusing I think. Most people don't understand licenses. But when you write software you intend to sell for example you kind of need to know this stuff or have enough money to hire a lawyer who does.
