Your vision makes several assumptions. First, that the iPod will fade out in the near future. Second, that by the time the iPod fades out, the iTunes Store will not be fully established as THE place to buy online media. Also, you assume that all of the iTunes competitors, all of whom are hemmorhaging money, will still be in business.

Then there's the fact that all the current iTunes customers are going to have all those billions of songs in AAC format with FairPlay, and they're unlikely to be willing to re-buy them as WMA files with MS' DRM.

No, a more likely scenario is that long before the iPod fades out altogether, the balance will tip in favor of licensing and Apple will license FairPlay to other electronics manufacturers and rake in the dough you think is/will be going to Microsoft.

---wait until you see the contribution DRM makes to Microsoft's balance sheet---

How much money can they be making from licensing their scheme to a bunch of companies that are losing money?
