Uses
1. More and more people are needing the space to make DVD movies to send to the grandparents or other relatives with their camcorders especially the new mini-dv camcorders with firewire and usb ports. 30-45 minutes can easily be several gigabytes.
2. If Apple can make a 60Gig MP3 player people will find a way to fill that space by recording all their CDs and friends CDs to build a digital music library. 80-120 gigs used not unreasonable depending on recording quality.
3. If an individual or a family has been using a digital camera for the past 3 years it would not be unreasonable to have a total of several thousand pictures recorded which can also take up several gigabytes.
4. People record DVD movies for backup or make copies once in a while for their friends. That's at least 2-4 gigs per movie.
5. Games, games, and more games. Several gigs there per game (unless it's just card games like solitare).
6. Applications. Program Files under windows can be surprisingly large.
7. Personal DVR. I know many people who have built their own Digital Video Recorder buy adding a video capture card to their computer. Follows the same storage requirments of the camcorder.
8. More and more households have 2 or more computers with each computer accumulating data (pictures, music, etc..). With this in mind there is usually a single computer with large or multiple hard drives where data can be deposited and centralized for backup or for the purpose of clearing out space on the other computers.
Etc, etc, etc......
