True, but
in VHS vs. Beta it wasn't just techno buffs. Anybody who REALLY REALLY wanted a way to record TV shows or watch movies at their leisure would enter the market for those machines. Now you don't have that, because those people are already satisfied.

Besides, the status symbol owning a Blu-ray or HD DVD would not be nearly the status symbol owning a VHS or Beta was back in the day.
