The difference between Beta vs. VHS and HD DVD vs. Blu-ray
is that before Beta and VHS you had nothing. It was a classic case of this or that. You had no way to view movies on your TV unless it was broadcast, and you had no way to record anything off your TV. Now, you have excellent quality TV recording and prerecorded movies what with DVRs and DVDs, and now DVD burners. HD DVD and Blu-ray aren't only competing with each other, they are competing against what we have in the marketplace already. So even the biggest techno-geeks would think twice about plonking down their hard earned cash on either one of these technologies.

In fact I can argue that what we have now is better than either of these two. Because first, how much better can you get than what we have now? And second, the options we have now are much cheaper than HD DVD and Blu-ray. And third, who needs the extra baggage of the inevitable DRM? And I'm not talking about just being able to rip movies, I'm talking about the added restrictions placed on honest people who have to suffer the consequences brought on by illegal file sharing.
