This story makes one huge assumption.
That assumption is that one or the other will win the format war. History has shown that the market can do something else. Namely, ignore both formats. CDTV vs CD-i comes to mind here.

With the increasing memory density of solid-state circuitry, it's conceivable that movies could simply be distributed on media like USB pen drives. Admittedly, it's currently a lot cheaper to make discs, but that might not always be the case. Other methods of distribution such as the Internet could surpass discs as well.
