And in Canada too. You can call them Cheques or Checks. Though Checks get a little confusing as checks are like safety checks where as the Cheque is a promise of payment.
It's really just the changing English language. The US is quicker to do than other English speaking countries. There are other words such a lite and light or night and nite.
It really boils down to age more than location. Elderly people prefer the old spelling.
