And in Canada too. You can call them Cheques or Checks. Though Checks get a little confusing as checks are like safety checks where as the Cheque is a promise of payment.

It's really just the changing English language. The US is quicker to do than other English speaking countries. There are other words such a lite and light or night and nite.

It really boils down to age more than location. Elderly people prefer the old spelling. The younger crowd is more open to change and why type extra letter to get the same thing when confusion is avoid by looking at the context the word is used in.
