and you are right...

the markup on the games is hellacious and they make that money they lose on the console almost immediately. Consider this, to make a game after the actual building of the game it probably costs them at the most 5(we'll say 10 just to be over a bit) dollars a game with everything, packaging, artworks etc. They then sell these games at 50 bucks a pop, thats a 500% markup as soon as it leaves the shelf. If this is a good game and sells like Halo 2 did, viola, instant profit from the consoles.
