Headphones, Bass, and a Cheap Tweak
Shure and Etyomic make awesome headphones. They are precision instruments and are priced accordingly. The only ways to get bass are 1) circumaural designs (big over-ear cans like Senneheisers / Grados /AKGs) or tightly sealed intraural designs (Shure, Etyomic). A huge improvement in the standard Apple 'buds' can be made by using the silicone rubber 'Cheerios' available from Radio Shack for $5 that slip over the individual earpieces allowing them to seal the ear canal better. They also slip out much less often from the sweat and vibration of jogging, skiing, etc. The key to bass is creating the pressure of the low frequency soundwave, and that can't happen without a tight seal, either in our around the ear.
