I Blame them
As a long time radio announcer and Mobile DJ I can vouch for hearing loss due to excessive noise through using badly designed headphones.
The ear plug style headphones used by Ipod and other MP3 players compund the problem because that cannot block out external sound.
Good quality headphones that cover the whole ear, provide proper air flow and block out external sound do not require high volume levels.
But then they aren't cool.
