Not an issue
Today I load all my DVD into a box like this. In 7 years there is a new format, say flash memory sticks for movies. If I want this new format I still have buy new again. Not really an issue.

The thing with new formats is you need a reason to get people buying. Going from tape to CD and DVD had good reasons. People hated rewinding and fastforwarding. That's what made people move to the new format. Then add quality to the mix and people feel they are getting better deal.

The new formats of DVD I think will get a cold reception as they really don't offer anything more than additional quality if you happen to have all the bells and whistles for an entertainement system. Most of us don't have that.

So this issue of re-buying isn't really an issue at all.
