Hard Drives vs. Trees

"That's the same amount of information you could store on the paper from 400,000 trees..."

Why on earth do we STILL compare hard disk capacity to Reams of Paper, Acres of Trees, and Libraries of Congress? Is it still relevant or useful in our day and age? 15 years ago perhaps, when 3-1/2" shareware floppies ruled the day. But today, it seems such "tree/paper" comparsions are only used to entertain the technically dumb, not the technically savvy.

Wouldn't other types of capacity comparisons be more useful for today? Say the eqivalent number of data CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, or hours of recorded TV programming?

Maybe compare with the number of MP3 songs? Though songs seem to be the normal comparison for flash media and players, not hard disks.
