The joy of TiVO
I am an admitted gadget fanatic, and have spent 10s of thousands of dollars--many of which were wasted on too-complex, undependable, or over-hyped products.
I got TiVo through DirecTV, and would be more inclined to give up DirecTV than TiVo. TiVo has a computer (disk-drive) based system that astounds me with its speed and dependability. It's interface is elegantly simple, and why PC companies can't learn from its example is frustrating.
If you have a chance to get a DVR, get a TiVo and accept no imitations. You will be disappointed with the clumsy interfaces or undependability.
In 4 years of experience (2 machines times 2 years) they have never been rebooted except for the self-reboots when power was lost in the home. They take 5-10 minutes to boot, but they sure must have a good housekeeping program to watch out for disc errors.
