NTP
My understanding from the discription of the company, is it is not publicly traded. It is a Trust managed by lawyers for the wife of the "inventor". They were offered what many of us would consider a fortune but got greedy and pushed the issue to the point it became more economical to pay the lawyers than NTP. Since the concepts that the patents were based on had been previously published in Europe and RIM is a Canadian Company the issue was originally only a U.S. Patent issue which shouldn't have affected the company itself. The court decided to apply U.S. patents to a foreign company and service which is simular to EC applying their patents to a U.S. Company. The normal solution is to either not sell there or pay for a patent license which is what RIM originally tried to do. That is why most companies try to patent internationally. Legally, RIM could stop U.S. Sales, put up a CANADIAN Web site to sell them with the warning "NOT FOR U.S. Sales" (which everyone would ignore), then find some way to provide service to the U.S. from Canada and there would have been no case to begin with.

By pushing the patent issue for more money than originally agreed upon, NTP made RIM prove that the service was based on technology older than the patent (which they have so far). Now, NTP has to go back and prove that they originally thought of the technology the patents are based on (which will be almost impossible) or lose their profits from the people they did sell licenses to. Basicly they shot themselves in the foot while holding up the bank.
