D70s worked well in low light
I've been using a Nikon D70s in low light, shooting a village pantomime from the back of the hall. It worked a lot better than expected given the relatively slow lens. Pictures (downsampled for the web) at http://www.littondale.me.uk/Alladin.html.

I've seen some noise in some shots, but not problematic.
