Patents require publication
One gets 20 years of protection for an invention, but only in return for making the invention public. And, no longer can someone keep a patent application hidden for 20 years while prosecuting it -- real submarine patents. Publication generally comes 18 months after the application is filed. BOTH exclusivity and publication are part of the US patent system to "promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts".
