Nor is good marketing!
Microsoft's speciality is marketing to businesses and Apple's speciality is marketing to consumers. Nothing about the iPod is particularly revolutionary, its success over others is primarily due to advertising. When was the last time you saw a TV commercial for any portable digital music player other than the iPod? No doubt the product has to be "good enough" but the difference here is purely in the marketing departments of Apple vs the rest.
