- Why just Ipod what about VHS or DVD?
-
Why didn't Senator who mentioned giving ripped audio to his child not stop to think about video instead of just audio on Ipods? We all know it is because that is a new thing, but the fact that he could not see the correlation was so pathetic. Now about video. The common things that will not happen shortly after this passes. No more video excerpts created for any reason; not for joy, not for teaching, not for parody, and not even for evidence. Since the limitations can now be specified in a flag. How long before Sony creates a flag with the right to only copy and play one one device? No more tapes for grandma! What about the next new device that does anything they do not foresee, ie the video Ipod? Never going to happen! What about open source low cost media centers? Nope you cannot give away how a device and software are made to respect the flag as this would show the programmer how to bypass it and the devices must not be user modifiable anyways. Do you like skipping commercials on your Tivo? Well think about it. In order to pause it has to copy. What if the No copy flag is on? They might leave an exception for this but that is deceptive given the other powers they will have. How long before Sony build systems into their boxes that forbid blocking commercials and then they uses their special regulatory power to only approve devices that require this feature. They do not have to just say no to other devices, they can simply make it to costly and time consuming to get a device approved. This last point also shows you the enormous monopoly like control this will give the industry. Can you imagine giving a company the right to say what can and cannot compete with them. Would they have have ever approved Tivo, any type of Ipod with ripping and burning support, or even a VCRs. In short this is a give away of power and control to a group of amoral greedy corporations that did not have the common sense to adapt when they had the chance and now want to mandate we all ride in their carriages and ignore those fancy new motor thingies.
For those who missed that last one, the horse and buggy industry got several states and congress to pass laws protecting them and restricting how cars were allowed to be used before they finally collapsed. - Posted by: alricsca Posted on: 01/24/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
