linux reference is more than kernel.. bigger than Tivo
Actually... the Tivo folks use a lot more than the kernel and drivers for specific hardware. There is more OSS in that box that is GPLed that they would have to deal with even if they COULD change to FreeBSD. The Windows comment is laughable. A non-coder speaking.. obviously (not to mention expensive for a company that does not make any money).

Who cares about Tivo anyway. They just lost their gravy train customer in Direct, the digital video recording is being put into your cable or satalite offering (not to mention the birth of ondemand), and anyone who wanted analog PVR and is a linux geek has been on mythtv or Freevo for awhile anyway (software is better anyway... cuts commericals!).

What I would be interested in is all the buried OSS code from GNU and others that is embedded in companies who promote/add DRM. I think this is VERY bad news for yahoo, google, and the like. If they want to use DRM, then they are back to rewrites of key code within their infrastructure. I want GPL exploits to leak and I want major law suits by the FSS against those abusers of OSS code. I hope they make this license soooo hard to work with that EVERYONE is forced to rethink the DRM ideas and come up with something much better (not hard if you think about it). I don't think that will push everyone to Redmond... they are too hard to work with.. and stab too many of us regularly (see IEEE on MPEG4 verses Microsoft HD encoder). DRM is not to stop piracy. It's there to force upgrades and make money. The companies using the stupid forms we have today are ONLY INTERESTED IN IT AS FAR AS IT CREATES REOCCURING REVENUE FOR THEM. Their media... their way... That's all you get.

In this week alone I have run into two different instances at my job where the M$ folks in Redmond have made it sooo hard to deal with their Media services in 2003 that we wrote around them to deliver our content.

I totally agree with the FSF on this... Please make the GPL3+ so restrictive that if you have an idea of DRM that is not user controlable you invalidate your use of any media/stream/encoding OSS software. Please OSS projects adopt it... as soon as it comes available.

DRM is about greed not protection. Study the methods and just think of the 100 improved ways you can come up with that keep people honest enough without totally killing their ability to use their computers/appliances with media they PAY for.
