They Want To Use Media To Force You Into Windows X
Ever since ME MS has been using its trying to use its Media Player to force upgrades. It wasn't until they decided they wanted to start DRMing stuff that they finally put out WMP 9 for 9X- They changed their mind though and WMP 10 is only XP. WMP 11 right now is only for the XBox and Vista.

The MAC OX Player only goes up to version 9. Linspire tried to license the WMP formats but MS would only license them up to version 9. The Codec pack that is now being offered, for no charge, to OSX users only goes up to version 9. DO you see the patern? If you are on Windows 9X or 2K you can only get WMP up to version 9.

MS trys to say they 95-99% Market Share for WMP but fails to mention that if you use WMP V 10 or higher then Win 2K, Win ME, Win 9X, Mac OSX, Linux (Legally- however many of the Linux Media Players are able to use any codec you happen to have lying around so if they have a copy of the codec they could use it, but it may not be, and is not in the US, legal)which cuts the market share down signigantly.

In otherwords if you want to reach the widest possible market with a modern format use Real's or the FOSS formats- the user may have to install something but they can at least veiw it. Don't believe the MS market hype that you should use WMP X (The Latest Version) as that has the most market share- as it is a lie.
