This Was Already True Before WMP OSX Was Canned
The most current version that was supported was Windows media Player 9. Even these codecs only go up to version 9 but the most current version of Windows media player for XP is version 10 with version 11 in the Vista Beta and XBox360.

The Only truly cross platform media format is REAL and the FOSS http://www.xiph.org/ Ogg, Vorbis, Theora, etc.
