Good example of innovation
"Hmm, what happens if we take this program and make it work with that one." "Hmm, what happens if we use this guy's idea but in a slightly different way?"

This exactly what innovation is.

Most of the truly revolutionary ideas were thought up at Universities or by the little guy yet it is almost always companies like Apple and Microsoft who end up with the profits.

This would be more where invention occurs. Most time invention produces something that is not profitable until innovation of said invention occurs. This is not always the case as some inventions just are profitiable off the start though and continue to be profitable decades later through continuous innovation.
