Virtuous?
I don't think either company is "virtuous". Apple and Microsoft are out to make money, end of story. They have both walked over the little guy and claimed innovation when there was none when the opportunities have presented themselves. Honestly tic, don't fall for the trap that just because someone calls your religion... um... I mean "favorite company" to task for something, doesn't mean that I think any other company is any better. I think Microsoft is a ruthless company but Apple isn't any better. If anything, it was Apple's greed that prevented them from getting big enough to put themselves in the situation where they could illegally use a monopoly. Their whole treatment of the digital music market shows me exactly how they would have acted if they currently had 90% of the desktop market.
