Its about quality and who owns the compression technology patent
"Most movie studios and the biggest electronics companies support a format called Blu-ray. It uses DVD-sized discs that can store up to 50 gigabytes apiece, compared with up to 16 gigabytes stored on a double-sided DVD."

I continue to prefer tape to DVD owing to the better sound coming off of tape. It is my understanding that in order to cram a film like Kong or Gone With the Wind on a conventional DVD the decision was made to short out the sound portion of the recording. Of course the vidio portions are also shorted out. The quoate above (from Seattle Times) indicates that the film industry is not making that mistake a second time. 50 gigs versus 16 likely means less reliance on a company like Microsoft in coming up with software compression algorythems that can produce high quality. I also suspect it is about patents held by companies like Microsoft and Intel involving such compression technology. It is not about consumer choice which can of course be manipulated by advertising. Its about ownership of some patent, I suspect. Just like Beta and VHS only in this case the public can understand that 50 is more than 16. I don't see Gates prevailing here in the long term. His company will be supporting both formats and eventually the most open to developers format will win out. In the short term there is milking of the cows called US consumers. This is the kind of thing that government (to protect consumers) should be involved in.
