OK, back to being serious:
I completely agree with you that Doom and Nightmare on Elmstreet will only make killers out of those ALREADY messed up beyond any help. Stephen King books will do the same. (Note to self: I should blame being overweight on playing Pac-Man in the 80's.)
However, as with all things, there are limits and reasonable restrictions. I don't mind my 6 year-old watching me destroy monsters. Those monsters are evil, and are trying to kill me while I try to save people. He knows monsters are pretend. They don't exist. But I would not let him watch me play something like GTA3 where (to my knowledge) it is acceptable or even rewarding to shotgun an innocent pregnant woman just for fun. It doesn't really teach good values.
I've had them walk in on a movie where it showed a woman's bre@sts for a few seconds. They didn't notice or care. Neither did I. But I'm not going to let them sit through "An@1 Bond@ge R@pist Rough S3x Faci@1s #23" fifty times.
There are differences in extremes. I believe in the right to own a pistol or rifle, but a M136 Anti-Tank Weapon in your trunk is going a little far.
