DOS and Windows 3.1 certainly could
Lets rememer that Windows 3.1 was simply a GUI (graphical User Interface). Microsoft confused consumers (I think really defrauded them) by claiming that Windows 3.1 was an operating system product when it was simply graphical software in the same notion as Autodesk. Just application software with little relation to the operating system. They further confused the market by stating that Windows was not DOS, which in concert with the previous lie made consumers think Windows 3.1 was an operating system.

A true operating system, OS/2 was killed with these mistatements (really lies) and this is why Microsoft settled with IBM even though IBM never brought action against Microsoft. It whould have to happen eventually, we all recognize this, shareholders were demanding it.

I personally was running DOS and a very similar to Windows 3.1 GUI on an HP Palmtop that retailed for 300. Lets not pretend that a decade of computing devices, like the HP Palmtop were not harmed by Microsoft marketing. Texas instruments is another fine example. Calculators are computing devices retailing for less than 20 bucks. This little engines could but owing to Monopoly power will not allowed to.

HP was eventually given an offer it could not refuse to build WinCE palmtops, an offer, I have always suspected involved killing the superiour HP 100 line of DOS based palmtops.

Today every OS I know of has DOS emulator software. That little engine that could still does and big time. Perhaps a DOS based wind up in addition to a Linux base one should be looked into. Does Microsoft own DOS. Who does if not?
