Kids really have become squishy anymore.
Voska hit the nail on the head it just needs to be driven home. Parents lately seem to be entirely too committed to keeping Darwin from getting a shot at their kids. What I mean is, as a kid I was involved in some incredibly stupid activities (note: don't skimp on the duct tape that holds your home-made parachute together), but we had to solve the problems associated with our exploits and then weigh the potential pain and broken bones against the rewards. Kids use to have to think for themselves and then solve the problems they were confronted with. Now they get neatly packaged entertainment that has been sanitized for their protection. I swear, if I ever see a Wham-O Storm Drain Carpet Remnant Toboggan, I'll take my own life!

Violence? Why bother, if you were mad at someone, just let them guinea pig your new bicycle ramp, he?ll get the crap beaten out of him by gravity while you iron out the kinks in your design.

Taking part in stupid, high risk outdoor activities as a kid and having to take responsibility for your own hide and make real judgment calls really did a lot for us. My circle of childhood friends went on to become aerospace engineers, programmers, geologists, project managers, and yes??one chiropractor who shall remain nameless.

I personally propose that parents give Darwin a shot at weeding their children out of the gene pool a little more often ? it actually makes the kids THINK and take some responsibility for their own actions for a change.

Darwin had his shot at my friends and me as children, but we out-thought and out engineered him to earn our right to live on!

And remember, nitroglycerin may be fun to play with, but stove-top nitro fires will prove that mothers are far more volatile!
