Reasons are obvious
Kids don't fancy Mario anymore nowadays, and prefer violence, which is bad.

Nintendo kept insisting on milking the cow with games that consist of 1001 different combinations of "Mario" in the title, and counted on blind consumer loyalty to keep on selling the same thing over and over again. While not being exclusively symptomatic of Nintendo, this is also bad.

Moving their attention to the neat NDS and Revo is a smart move on their part, but for the love of God, drop the Mario Rubbish... It's starting to look embarassing...
