Not quite accurate. The song's publisher gets paid according to data tracked by BMI and ASCAP. So even though you may hear Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" on the radio, the Hendrix estate is not making money--Bob Dylan is.

Artists typically make money based on the "profit" shown by the release, not the revenue. Record companies often apply a series of (sometimes ludicrous) deductions to minimize the actual profit shown by a release. For example, free copies of CDs that are distributed for promotional purposes are deducted at full retail (not the cost to manufacture), even though no one actually pays retail for CDs. In addition, artists more often than not have their recording session expenses removed from what profits they do see (paying the label back for recording the album).

And someone else posted that artists may see 8%--that would only apply to a well-established artist with a proven track record of sales. It's usually much much less.
