Palm would do well to rethink
I believe Palm should listen to the rumors. There's common sense there. Why write your own OS that's destined to become a niche player, when you could adapt something like a version of embedded Linux, which has lots of outside work going on and support in other arenas? When you roll your own, you're taking the full brunt of the costs and limiting the possibilities for that component of your product. In my experience, the Palm OS is a cobbled p.o.c., with some real design limitations, and it could only help to listen to the rumors and switch to another embedded OS. The core product isn't the OS anyway - its the device running it. Focus on the core product, spend fewer resources rolling your own on the OS and more on innovating the core product.
