"Anytime I hear of gov'ts getting involved, I think of collective
projects in the Ukraine under Stalin."

It must be nice to ignore the great advances made by successful
government intervention.

i) welfare programs, particularly during the depression
ii) mandatory primary school education and its effects on raising
literacy (great example being the Soviet Union)
iii) Immunisation programmes and basic health care
iv) minimum working conditions
v) anti discrimination progress
vi) sanitation

"If the government got out of health care, it would be
affordable."

Funny in Australia our public health care system is the dominant
provider of health care service yet the quality is very good and
affordable to everybody.

I'm a liberal and therefore have a pragmatic approach to
government intervention, but I find it surprising that
government involvement is instantly ridiculed by some when the
evidence of successful intervention is for all to see. And yes
there have been failures.
