In a word - sales tax
You stop to buy something in a certain state and you pay sales tax to that state. Never mind that you just "popped in" and barely made any use of their infrastructure/services (like driving 50' on a service drive to a gas station off the interstate).

Telecommuting is popular because you don't physically have to be somewhere - but when it comes to taxes it IS important? If YOU are the company, and YOU are working in your own home for YOUR own benefit - then yes, you pay taxes to the state you are living in. You gain the benefit from the state for ALLOWING you to run a business, and it gains taxes in return. If states would allow companies to do business - and get NOTHING in return in terms of taxes - they would be stupid (or suicial).
