However, it should also be noted that new iPod designs seem to roll out at a rate of a new generation signature (top line) model every 12-15 months. Consumers deciding to buy dedicated accessories on that model and design can spend hundreds of dollars easily, even far outstripping the cost of the iPod itself, which goes to feed this iPod frenzy and only ADDS to the product's popularity.
IF Apple decides to re-invent the iPod annually then all they've succeeded in doing is add instability into the supply and support chain. The iPod savvy are less likely to go out and buy that in-wall dock, RF remote or that iPod speaker system because in a year's time it's quite possible it's going to be SO obsolete with the next generation's design.
