Several inaccuracies

"The great part about renting songs is that if one service gets too expensive, you can just switch to another one. Of course if all your music is in Apple's proprietary DRM, then it would be difficult switching to something else using WMA format which many more manufacturers use."

That's a nice notion, but what will happen, just like in other industries where there is "competition" - all the stores will end up about the same price.

And, look up Hymn or JHymn - you can strip Apple's DRM off the file and have a regular AAC file.

Or you can burn to CD and re-import to have a plain old MP3.

Nothing proprietary about that. If anything, WMA is very proprietary as it's Windows-only.
