Buying Milk
Hi, laratte.

In your blog, you say:

To me, buying a CD today is like bringing a cow home instead of getting a half gallon of milk whenever I need it. Having a cow in the back yard is more trouble than walking to the store.

The trouble with this analogy is that once you buy a gallon of milk, that gallon of milk is yours. When you rent music, that music is only yours for the rental period, and the cost of that rental can change without notice. There's absolutely nothing to keep the music companies from changing your rental fee from $12 or $15/month to $50/month. And once that happens, you either pay or you lose the music, exactly as would happen if you rented an apartment and the rent went up.

The other issue is that music isn't like milk. A lot of music has emotional meaning to the purchaser/renter. (Again, like renting an apartment.) How would you or your wife feel about it if the price went up, and you could no longer afford to rent your wedding song? Worse, what if the company folds, and your license to all your music is null and void, no matter how much you'd be willing to rent it for?

I really don't see renting music as that much of a bargain, unless you'd be willing to erase your entire music library on a moment's notice.
